PEKIN
PEKIN is designed as a task lighting system for recreational artists in small spaces. Inspired by the American Pekin Duck, the statement lighting piece adds a characteristic whimsy to any artsy space. PEKIN cartoonishly personifies lighting with its oversized head and small body, creating a sense of playful imbalance and personality.
PEKIN is not just cute but functional. This helpful duck will hold your favorite writing utensils in its bubbly wings, serving as storage for the most important desk essentials. In addition, adjustable legs allow the user to customize PEKIN’s position to the most optimal lighting positions for any task. Much like a duck, PEKIN can also quack! Its beak is adjusted by pulling the tail to adjust lighting.
THE PROBLEM
Designing task lighting for a specific recreational task.
Current task lighting for small-space arts and crafts often compromises form for function, lacking personality and character. In addition, most art lights lack adjustable diffusion, color accuracy, storage, and adjustability. How do we create a lamp that solves these problems and still adds character to the space?
ADJUSTABILITY
One of the biggest problems I faced while creating PEKIN was how to make the lamp adjustable. Initially, I tested articulating systems through hinges and springs; however, they were not strong enough to support the lamp's weight. Eventually, I discovered flexible metal magnetic screw-picking up tools, which I took apart to use as the "legs" for the lamp.
